Who Will Be The Next...Ultimate Fighter?

I was watching The Ultimate Fighter last night.  The Chiesa fight was awesome.  I was up cheering and spilling pasta when he got the win.  Anyway, after the fights they showed the profile pics of the 6 guys left in the competition, and those fighter pics were too tempting not to draw from.

A Real Caricature Gig!

So yesterday I was hired to do caricatures for a local event!  I had a great time, and even made a little money.  It was a bit slow at first but I took that time to practice up for when someone would actually know that I was drawing them.  These were all done of people coming and going, but are pretty close to the style of caricatures that I did of people later in the night.  Happily people took the actual caricatures home with them (or were nice enough to dispose of them out of sight haha).

I thought about using marker, but ended up sticking with pencil since that's how I usually sketch (other than pen, but pen wasn't going to work for these).  I'll practice with marker sometime because I think it gives a nice finished look, but I didn't want to test that out last night.  Cafe sketching has definitely helped, these were all probably around 5 minutes since I was trying not to keep people from the party for much longer than that.

Late Night With Conan O'brien

Found Conan working late last night.  Hadn't watched the show in a while.  Conan and Andy still working their awkwardly charming magic, or something.  So here are a couple caricatures I sketched while watching.

Conan - With that hair I probably didn't even need to bother with a face.

Andy - I like the personality here, though he looks maybe a touch too sinister.

Tom Selleck - Tom was the guest, obviously I should have pushed the mustache more.

Still not quite happy with a few things (mostly with the eyes, need to work on the face feeling less flat) but I think there's a bit of a likeness going on.  Drawing from TV is definitely harder than drawing from life.

Golden Compass Character Lineup Part 2

Golden Compass Character Lineup Part 2

So I finished watching The Golden Compass tonight and got a few more sketches in.  The page got a little cramped so maybe next time I'll think about drawing fewer people per page, but it's kind of nice having them on the same page to work back and forth on.  Also I cannot draw big cats from memory.  And eventually I'll look at drawing with more than 2 colours.  Maybe.

The orange and blue are just kind of there to have a bit of contrast, more like tones than colours.  Character lineups are fun though, and a good excuse to watch movies!

Golden Compass Character Lineup

Golden Compass Character Lineup

Sketching while watching a bit of The Golden Compass.  Thought it was kind of an interesting character lineup, so here it is.  Fun movie to sketch from.  Cool finding similarities between the animal (demon) and the person they are connected too.  I was trying to look at shapes and overall feeling to make them feel sort of the same.

UFC Caricatures

Tried drawing some caricatures while watching UFC tonight.  Fun to do, I'll try some more shortly.  Definitely see a few things to improve for next time.  Good luck figuring out who they are without reading the names!

Kinzu the killer chef

Here's another part to a little character design thing I'm doing with my friend Christine.

Here's the first part that I did.
Here's the second part that Christine did.  She even did a sweet animatic.

She created Steve the dinosaur, so now I'm making up a character that could interact with Steve.

Steve works a pretty regular job for a dino in this economy.  He punches in as a tax accountant from 9 to 5 and plays recreational sports until he shreds his shoes (His claws are definitely not non-marking footwear).

Tonight Steve is walking home when he runs into...

Kinzu...the killer chef.

Kinzu runs a famous but highly controversial restaurant that caters to those with deep pockets and questionable consciences.

Kinzu travels the earth searching for rare and endangered animals to serve as the showpiece in his Sunday buffet.  He has a knife for every occasion and knows how to use them all.  He tolerates the hairnet over his wiry goatee because although he is quite mad, he is fanatical about kitchen cleanliness.  Last week the main attraction was koala quiche.  This week Kinzu has already started printing posters claiming dino a l'orange will be on the menu.  Look out Steve!!!
