035 - End of First Semester

Alright, here's a bit of everything to finish up first semester.  I've got a bit of life drawing, an animation, and even some design work.

We had to pick our "10 Best" life drawings from the semester.  Tough to pick out, but I'm pretty happy with what I went with.  Also felt nice that the majority of the drawings were fairly recent.  I tried to show a mix of 1-10 minute poses.  Most of these I've had up on here before.

The one on the left.  Like the volumes on the arms and shoulders.

Super simplified, but I like it.

Like the perspective and shapes.

Some alright contours.

Some weight to it.

Like the lean.

The left one.

Getting better at structure and contours.

This is a new one.  This one came out pretty well.  Kind of loose, but with structure.  Eep! Just realized she totally has two left feet though...Oops?

Felt like throwing a longer pose in.

Alright here is the last animation assignment of the year.

It's one character morphing into another, then jumping around for five seconds or so.  We picked the music clip from a list, but recorded our own morph sounds.

And here is a link to our group design project.  I worked with Kelli and Alex on this one.

We worked in groups of three to come up with a back story and model pack for three characters.  I focused mostly on Voland, the little animal dude.  He was fun, despite figuring out the mouth chart for the muzzle.

Now it's time to enjoy sleeping in for a few days before the new year.  First semester was great though!

034 - Dialogue: Pirate Voice

This one took a while...but was fun to do.  Getting the motion right (or as close as I could, to what I wanted) actually took a lot more time than syncing up the mouth.

I like the pull back into the punch, and the punch itself.  Bringing his hand back is ok.  I think I could improve the finger wag part, and also make it so he doesn't slide around at the end.  Next time :)

Great pirate voice also cutesy of me.

033 - Sheridan Art Fundamentals Stuff: Part II of II

Here is the second (and last) group of work I did last year at Sheridan in the Art Fundamentals Program.

You can check out the first group HERE if you want.  The first group had stuff about the 2D design, 3D design, and some info on the elective.

This group is from the remaining three classes: Drawing Systems, Painting, and Life Drawing.

Drawing Systems
This course was about drawing shapes technically, with perspective, and realistically textured.
It started out kind of dry, pretty much a drafting class, but it was definitely helpful.  It got better as I started thinking about it in terms of layout or prop design stuff.

Technical stuff.

Slightly less technical stuff.

Painting
This one also included some colour theory stuff, which was great to learn.  Started with some light and shadow studies, getting different textures, different styles of painting, and so on.  Painting is fun, but painting realistically (for me) is the most efficient way to ruin a decent drawing.  Once I had a little more practice I didn't worry about blending the paint to look quite realistic, and had fun with it, even if I painting hands or feet still drove me crazy.

First semester paintings.

Second semester paintings.

My favorite painting from the year.  Almost looks like actually has hands.

Life Drawing
Drawing on newsprint with conte or china markers.  Worked on gestures, measuring, line weight.  A lot of short poses, but also some longer poses in class.  Practicing during the open sessions helped a ton.

Some first semester drawings.

An even smaller percentage of second semester drawings.

Second semester different materials stuff..

We got into some longer poses here.  Some were 3, 6, or even 9 hours.  We also used some different materials (like transparent plastic, different papers, charcoal and pencil crayons).

This was my favorite drawing from life drawing.  It's pencil crayon on black paper.  I think it was called the Big Foot Project.  The colour pallet changed with distance, and the perspective was warped to exaggerate height.

Alright, that's a wrap!  I learned a lot and the program helped me put together a pretty good portfolio to get into the Animation Program I wanted.

032 - Life Drawing: The Rest of November

Here are some more November life drawings.  Trying to work on line quality and contours (both of which sometimes hurt my brain).

Playing around with angular style.

Contours without outline or gesture.

Like the exaggerated perspective and structure of the shapes.

I think my left hand secretly knows what line quality is...But it's not telling the right.

"No wishing for more wishes!"

Could use a little more detail here, but I like the feel of this one.

Playing around with some character design.

Not horrible contours on this one and the previous one.

Same pose, different lines.

Angular scribble style.

This one came out alright.

Had fun with this pose.

Pirates?

I think I'm finally caught up on life drawing pics.  It's tough finding a balance between contours and not overdrawing, but nice when it works.

031 - A flapper and other assorted scribbles

Some Design work.  This assignment was to do some research to make designs feel more authentic.  This 1920's flapper was the design I submitted.

Pretty happy with it.

The rest were rough sketches of some of the other possible options.  I sketched a few rough ideas without doing any research, thinking that I'd narrow it down to the one I liked the best, then just research one or two.

Liked the shapes in this guy.

This one cracks me up, I'm not quite sure why.

This one wasn't even one of the time periods we could choose, I was just doodling.

This was a fun page.  In between all the drawing we were doing, we took a break yesterday to...draw?  I think Walrus Gladiator is my favorite, but Donkey Cowboy and Worm Banker are close.

This next batch are actual scribbles - you know, as in the scribble game?  One person scribbles on a page and then gives you the page to make into something..  Part of the same putting off drawing by doing more drawings session.

Um...a unicorn?

Fat bird and a worm: take one.  I seem to draw a lot of scribble birds.

That's all the scribbles for now!
